| Since
arriving in Schoonhoven at the end of August 2008 I have been very
busy. I spent the first four months of the program designing and
making two small collections; one to send to ‘Dazzle’ a selling
exhibition taking place in London’s National Theatre building from
November 2008 till January 2009 and the other to take to ‘Designer
Crafts at the Mall’ an exhibition in London which took place in
January. It was organized by the Society
of Designer Craftsmen who have since awarded me a Licentiate
membership with Distinction status. |

| |
| After
returning from Britain at the end of January I spent the following
two months developing my research and designs and documenting
everything I have learnt so far. I also experimented with forging
techniques to create a small collection of cutlery.
At the beginning of April I heard that I had been
selected for a Graduate Bursary Stand at Goldsmiths’ Fair in
September/October so I will be spending the upcoming and final
months of the program designing and making work for that. |

|
My work is currently on display at the ‘Dazzle’
exhibition in Glasgow until May and I am working on a design for a
sake set whilst putting the finishing touches to my cutlery
collection. |

I am inspired by the way the sea weathers and
erodes objects, changing their texture and shape; wearing away the
paint on wooden boats, matting the surface of plastics and glass and
eating away at metal. The jumble of objects and shapes you can find
in a harbour, boatyard or washed up on the beach captivates me.
Tumbled piles of lobster pots and fish crates, old ropes and buoys,
pieces of sea-washed glass and driftwood, as well as the shapes and
structures of boats themselves all inspire my work as a silversmith. |

I work mainly with silver and wood, often incorporating pieces of
collected flotsam. I enjoy exploring the different ways each
material can be worn away, textured and formed. Hammering silver
against rusted, marked surfaces creates interesting textures and by
wearing wood down to expose the grain, liming, painting and sanding
it, I can replicate the effect the sea has on a piece of driftwood. |
